North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a single-party state dominated by the Workers’ Party of Korea under the Kim dynasty. Since its founding in 1948, power has been held first by Kim Il-sung, then his son Kim Jong-il, and currently by his grandson Kim Jong-un. The regime is characterized by a highly centralized government, strict control over information and movement, and an extensive security apparatus, all justified by the state ideology of Juche self-reliance. Covering approximately 120,540 square kilometers on the northern half of the Korean Peninsula, North Korea features a rugged terrain dominated by the Baekdudaegan mountain range, which runs from the northeast to the southwest. The eastern coast is steep and narrow, while the western coastline along the Yellow Sea opens into broader plains that support agriculture. The country experiences a temperate climate with four distinct seasons: cold, dry winters influenced by Siberian air masses and hot, humid summers shaped by East Asian monsoons. Annual precipitation is heaviest from June to August, while coastal areas moderate temperature extremes compared to the inland highlands.
