Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China (ROC), operates as a vibrant multi-party democracy with its own constitution, president, and legislature. Since lifting martial law in 1987, Taiwan has transitioned from one-party rule under the Kuomintang (KMT) to an open, competitive political system. Presidential and legislative elections occur every four years, reflecting a robust civil society, freedom of the press, and active grassroots participation. Despite not being universally recognized as a sovereign state largely due to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) claiming Taiwan as part of its territory Taiwan maintains substantial informal diplomatic relations and strong economic ties with major world powers. This unique status has fueled ongoing cross-strait tensions, where Beijing pressures international actors to exclude Taiwan from multilateral organizations, even as Taiwan continues to bolster its defense capabilities and deepen ties with like-minded democracies.

Cultural Heritage and Identity

Taiwan’s cultural identity is a tapestry woven from indigenous traditions, Han Chinese influences, and centuries of colonial and international interaction. The island is home to over a dozen recognized indigenous groups such as the Amis, Atayal, and Paiwan each with distinct languages, music, and ritual practices. Beginning in the 17th century, waves of Han settlers introduced Minnan and Hakka languages, Confucian values, and folk religions, which blended with local customs. Japanese colonial rule (1895–1945) added further layers, evident in Taipei’s historic architecture and culinary innovations like bento-style meals. In contemporary Taiwan, there is a growing emphasis on preserving indigenous arts and languages, reviving traditional festivals, and promoting “Taiwanese” identity distinct from mainland China through education, popular media, and civic activism. The result is a dynamic cultural landscape in which modern art, mandarin pop, and global trends coexist with ancestral ceremonies, temple festivals, and regional dialects.

Geographical Landscape, Area, and Climate

Taiwan is an island nation located off the southeastern coast of China, covering approximately 36,197 square kilometers (13,976 square miles). Its terrain is dominated by rugged, forested mountains running north to south most notably the Central Mountain Range and the imposing Yushan (Jade Mountain), which rises to 3,952 meters, the highest peak in East Asia. Western Taiwan features fertile plains where the majority of the population resides, including the densely populated urban corridor stretching from Taipei to Kaohsiung. The eastern coast is characterized by dramatic cliffs and deep canyons, such as those in Taroko Gorge. Taiwan’s climate ranges from tropical in the south to subtropical in the north, with a distinct monsoon season from May to September, bringing heavy rainfall and potential typhoons. Winters are mild, especially along the coast, whereas higher elevations can experience snowfall. This varied geography and climate support rich biodiversity, including endemic species of flora and fauna, and make Taiwan prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
