Bosnia and Herzegovina is a parliamentary republic characterized by a unique and complex political structure established under the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement. The country is divided into two autonomous entities the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska alongside the Brčko District, a self-governing administrative unit. Executive power is vested in a three-member Presidency, with one Bosniak, one Croat, and one Serb member rotating the chairmanship every eight months. The bicameral Parliamentary Assembly consists of a House of Peoples and a House of Representatives, ensuring representation across the main ethnic groups. While this arrangement has preserved peace and balanced communal interests, it often leads to slow decision-making and inter-ethnic tensions in policymaking.

Covering approximately 51,197 square kilometers, Bosnia and Herzegovina boasts a varied terrain that ranges from Alpine peaks in the north and northwest to karstic limestone plateaus and Mediterranean-influenced valleys in the south. The Dinaric Alps dominate the landscape, offering rugged mountains and deep river canyons, such as the celebrated Tara River Canyon. Continental climate prevails in the inland regions, with hot summers and cold, snowy winters, while the southern Herzegovina corridor enjoys milder, Mediterranean conditions.
