Political Overview
Kosovo capital at Pristina, declared independence on February 17, 2008, and operates as a parliamentary republic. The country is divided into seven districts and 38 municipalities, and it shares borders with four neighboring states: Serbia to the north and east, North Macedonia to the southeast, Albania to the southwest, and Montenegro to the west. Although Kosovo is recognized as an independent state by over 100 United Nations member countries, it remains a subject of international diplomacy, particularly with Serbia, which does not recognize its sovereignty.
Cultural Heritage and Identity
The cultural fabric of Kosovo is richly woven from its Ottoman-era mosques, medieval monasteries, and vibrant folk traditions. The historic city of Prizren is often cited as a prime tourism area, home to the UNESCO‐listed Za Imaret Mosque and the annual Dokufest international documentary and short film festival. Traditional music and dance such as the “Shota” folk dance are celebrated nationwide, and the Newborn Monument in Pristina stands as a modern symbol of Kosovo’s unique identity and the international community’s recognition of its cultural resurgence.
