Nicaragua, with its capital in Managua, is a presidential republic that has undergone significant political transformations over the past century. After the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship in 1979, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) governed until the 1990 elections ushered in a period of democratic alternation. Covering an area of approximately 130,370 km², Nicaragua is bordered by Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, with coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Its terrain varies from the cloud forests and volcanic highlands of the Cordillera Isabelia to the lowland plains and wetlands of the Mosquito Coast. The country enjoys a tropical climate with a pronounced dry season (November–April) and a rainy season (May–October).
